Unlocking Mental Strain

Mental strain, by definition, means being in a state of worry and tension caused by a situation. We find ourselves in situations that cause mental strain ALL THE TIME. Death of a loved one, divorce, financial problems, or job loss…to name a few. Work-related stress can also have a negative impact on our mental health. We become disinterested in family and friends, short-tempered, impatient, anxious. Sleep is mocking us. We rely on alcohol or drugs to numb or quiet the negative thinking. It can become a nasty cycle if you don’t pump the brakes and take care of yourself.

When you are operating from a place of stress, you are not operating at your fullest potential. You experience brain fog, tension headaches, and a lack of focus. Sound familiar? The first step is to recognize that you are not managing the stress of your life in a healthy way. Can you take 5 minutes in your car before you go into work or home and unpack the origin of the stress. Name it. Just sit with it and accept it. Often times, the stress and circumstances are beyond our control. Trying to control it is often our first mistake. If the stress is bottled up and coming out sideways, we have no chance of moving through it. When you can unpack it, it doesn’t feel so big and overwhelming anymore.

Once you’ve recognized it, you can take steps to care for yourself and relieve the mental strain. Getting outdoors for an evening walk, cold plunge or infrared sauna, hydration, sleep and a mindfulness practice are all ways to reduce or alleviate stress. In MY experience, Breathwork is a fast track to managing and alleviating stress. Give me 45 minutes and you’ll have a greater sense of clarity about how to move forward, feel more committed to making choices that support a healthy mental state, and show up in your life at your fullest potential.
